PHILADELPHIA -- Corey Kluber inspired his teammates with a tough at-bat his first time up to the plate in the majors. Jason Kipnis hit a three-run homer, Nick Swisher and Mike Aviles also went deep to back Kluber, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Philadelphia Phillies 10-4 Wednesday. Kluber (3-2) gave up three runs and six hits in six innings. But it was his first career AB against Cole Hamels in the second inning that set the tone. Kluber fouled off consecutive 1-2 pitches and worked the count full before flying out to deep left. "I guess thats beginners luck," he said. Maybe so, but it made the hitters adjust their approach. "Corey woke us up, having the best at-bat in the first couple innings," Kipnis said. "We did a nice job not chasing his pitches. Thats an approach we try to take against everyone. We want to see some pitches, get quality at-bats." Hamels needed 91 pitches to get through four innings and reached 100 in the fifth. "We drove his pitch count up early," manager Terry Francona said. "We made him earn his outs and we scored early. Its great to work the count and have something to show for it." A day after rookie Jonathan Pettibone held the Indians in check, Hamels got roughed up by one of the leagues highest-scoring offences. Cleveland had been in a slight funk, scoring just seven runs in its previous four games. Hamels (1-6) allowed five runs and six hits in five innings. The three-time All-Star and 2008 World Series MVP has a 4.61 ERA, and the Phillies are 1-8 in his starts. Hamels had six straight quality starts before this one, with a 2.41 ERA in that span. "You have to go out there and execute pitches," Hamels said. "I wasnt able to do that early on. I think any time you go 3-2 to pretty much the whole lineup over and over, youre not putting yourself into a good spot. I was pitching myself into situations where most likely theyre going to get the hits, theyre going to get the walks, theyre going to score the runs." Jimmy Rollins drove in three runs for Philadelphia, which ended a three-game winning streak. The surprising Indians have won 12 of 16 and are 22-17 under Francona, in his first year with Cleveland after winning two World Series title in Boston in 2004 and 2007. Now the Indians get a day off after playing 14 games in 13 days. Theyll play 20 straight, starting Friday against Seattle. "These guys need it," Francona said. "They deserve it. They need a day away from the ballpark." Kluber rebounded nicely after allowing eight runs in 4 2-3 innings against Detroit in his previous start. "I threw more strikes, was more aggressive in the strike zone and didnt fall behind guys," he said. Mark Reynolds hit a two-run double with two outs in the third to give the Indians the lead. Kipnis doubled and Asdrubal Cabrera walked before Reynolds hit a drive to left to knock them in. John Mayberry Jr. singled in the third, advanced on a sacrifice and scored when Rollins lined a two-out single to cut it to 2-1. Rollins delivered another clutch two-out hit in the fifth. After singles by Carlos Ruiz and Mayberry, he ripped a two-run double to right to cut the deficit to 5-3. Aviles lined a homer to left in the fourth for a 3-1 lead. Swisher connected in the fifth, driving a 2-0 pitch a few feet inside the left-field foul pole to make it 5-1. Cabrera hit a two-run single with two outs in the sixth off Jeremy Horst to extend Clevelands lead to 7-3. Kipnis took Raul Valdes out to right in the eighth. The Phillies are 12-4 when Pettibone, Kyle Kendrick or John Lannan start. Theyre 7-17 in games started by the $64.5 million trio of Hamels, Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- When Indiana coaches started looking for weaknesses in Ohio States game, someone noticed the Buckeyes punter Cameron Johnston wasnt listed among the NCAA leaders at his position. So he must not be very good, right?Turned out that Johnston hadnt punted enough this year to even be listed in the NCAA stats. Johnston has punted just 11 times in four games, but his average -- 50.6 -- is among the best in the nation. So much for that.I dont know if youre a great punter if youd want to go to Ohio State, to tell you the truth, because they dont use him, Indiana coach Kevin Wilson quipped this week.In other words, the weaknesses are really hard to find.Fresh from an overtime upset of Michigan State last week, Indiana (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) visits Columbus on Saturday to play No. 2 Ohio State (4-0, 1-0) whose weapons are so numerous, Wilson said, that preparation is difficult. They play a lot of guys and they play hard, Wilson said. Theres a lot of talent and a great competitive spirit on that team.Other things to watch for when Indiana visits Ohio State:CONFIDENCE BOOST: Indiana receiver Mitchell Paige said the teams confidence level was high even before the Hoosiers knocked off Michigan State in OT. If the Hoosiers can beat Michigan State, why not the Buckeyes? Were starting to see we can do some things when we listen to coaching, understand more game plan -- there was a lot of really good film study last week -- knowing exactly what we were trying to do, said Paige, who is tied for the team lead with 18 receptions for 217 yards and got his first TD of the season last week.We can build on that this week and get even a little bit better. Well only be more confident and give ourselves a real chance on Saturday, Paige said.Wideouts Nick Westbrook (18 receptions, 370 yards, four TDs) and Ricky Jones (16 receptions, 350 yards, one TD) also will be competing for quarterback Richard Lagows attention Saturday.IT STARTS WITH JT: Ohio State cooach Urban Meyer has often said that Tim Tebow, his Heisman trophy-winning quarterback at Florida, is the gold standard for team leaders.ddddddddddddMeyer said this week that quarterback J.T. Barrett is very close to Tebow status in terms of leadership qualities.Yeah, J.T., in his own way, is exactly on the same level as Tim, and those are two elite leaders, Meyer said. There are some other guys, but, yeah, J.T. is certainly at that level.Barrett said hes honored that Meyer would talk about him and Tebow in the same conversation.I think theres something with great players, you can tell that everything is so personal, Barrett said. And I think when you watched (Tebow) play he was passionate and everything was personal to him. Everything mattered, every little thing, too, it all mattered and was personal to him, and thats why he was so fun to watch.Same with Barrett?Im getting there, he said.LANDERS RISING: Among the many pleasant surprises for Ohio State this season is an undersized redshirt freshman defensive tackle named Robert Landers.Generously listed as 6-foot-1 and 285 pounds, Landers -- from perennial state powerhouse Huber Heights Wayne -- leads the team with five tackles for a loss and is tied for seventh in the Big Ten with 1.25 tackles for a loss per game.Typically giving up several inches and 20 pounds or more to offensive linemen, Landers is quick and able to use his low center of gravity as leverage against larger men.Im a little short for my size, but it plays to my advantage, he said, noting that defensive line coach Larry Johnson likes to refer to him as gravity challenged.Said Meyer: You cant have a whole defensive line like that, but he creates havoc in there.---Follow Mitch Stacy at http://twitter.com/mitchstacyFor some of his other recent stories: http://bigstory.ap.org/content/mitch-stacy ' ' '
