With two weeks to go until Survivor Series, the prospect of WWEs first multibrand pay-per-view card since SummerSlam presents a challenge for the weekly booking of Raw and SmackDown. How does one keep alive the intensity of interbrand storylines while simultaneously preparing the majority of superstars -- both heel and babyface alike -- to join forces in one of three traditional Survivor Series elimination tag-team matches? Its a process that appears counterintuitive, with the majority of feuds forced to press pause for the month of November, making Survivor Series largely feel like an All-Star game with little meaning to the overall story. But its a tightrope over which Raw was able to successfully traverse on Monday, even with the tape-delayed broadcast from Glasgow, Scotland, providing equal moments of joy and frustration to viewers.Overall, Raw provided an entertaining three hours of pro wrestling Monday, as it overcame a recent trend of underwhelming storytelling by once again relying on the charisma and presence of its top stars. This weeks challenge was made more difficult by an unpredictable European crowd, which alternated between attempting to hijack the broadcast (while singing and chanting for Bayley during a nearly botched womens segment) and appearing dead silent. The shows payoff was an exciting Fatal 5-Way main event as commissioner Stephanie McMahon allowed Raws wildly diverse five-man Survivor Series team one final chance to sort out its differences ahead of the Nov. 20 PPV.The wild finish -- which announcer Michael Cole summed up by saying, That was ... weird -- provided a cliffhanger of sorts for next week, after Kevin Owens, who was knocked out from a Roman Reigns Superman punch, unknowingly scored a pinfall over his similarly unconscious best friend Chris Jericho.Overall, the main event did well to sell the dynamics of tension within the five-man team. While former Shield members Reigns and Seth Rollins appear to be at peace, theres new potential for unrest with Owens and Jericho. Braun Strowman, meanwhile, made it clear he isnt willing to work with anyone, having turned down Jeri-KOs earlier request to join forces with them. The tension was underwritten by McMahons warning in the shows opening segment (complete with a mic drop) that Team Raw should fight against SmackDown at Survivor Series as if their jobs depend on it, because they do.While a lengthy tag team segment in which The New Day was dressed like characters in Braveheart seemed to create polarizing reactions from fans online, Mondays show did feature strong developments in a pair of singles matches set for Survivor Series. One week after Intercontinental champion Dolph Ziggler issued an open challenge on SmackDown Live to any member of Raw, the title match was made complete after Sami Zayn defeated Rusev. The development was a welcome one for fans of Zayn, the outstanding in-ring worker who has floundered in recent months following the conclusion of his feud with Owens.Brock Lesnar, meanwhile, is often at his best in pre-taped video promos, and this week was no different. He hammered home not just his distaste for Goldberg and his family, but an extreme lack of concern for anyone but himself that remains the core of his heel persona. The Beast remains such a huge draw because of how real he is perceived by fans in ways that go beyond his stiff in-ring style and legitimate fighting background. Lesnar is often just as real on the microphone, and has never hidden his true motives as a hired gun of sorts, who remains in pro wrestling as much for the financial benefits and outlet for physicality than a true love of the art form. Its because of that foundation that Lesnars promo on Monday was so effective as he referenced how little he cares about his loss to Goldberg at WrestleMania XX because of the more important business that was ahead of him in the UFC. (Even if the timeline is a little skewed, as Lesnar departed from WWE in 2004 initially to make a run at the NFL.)Ultimately, Lesnar was able to effectively communicate his motives and intentions for his match against Goldberg on Monday (see the Line of the night below) in ways that he and advocate Paul Heyman were unable to in recent weeks, adding a much-needed jolt to the story line.Hits and missesThe Glasgow crowd failed to hold back its true feelings for anyone, giving outrageously loud pops to the likes of Bayley, Rollins, Owens and Scotlands own Noam Dar in his main roster cruiserweight debut. It was just as quick to boo those they did not like, which included an overwhelmingly negative reaction toward Reigns. The ovation provided an opportunity for commentator Corey Graves to showcase his heel ways and he didnt disappoint, saying, Sorry [Michael] Cole, I can barely hear you over this rousing ovation. It was good to see someone at WWE acknowledging something -- the fans rejection of Reigns as a babyface -- that has become such a consistent reality. It was a bit disappointing to see Strowman turn down the advances of Jericho and Owens, mostly because WWE currently lacks the kind of vicious heel stable the trio could conceivably provide. With the hot and cold booking of The Wyatt Family only watering them down of late (although the addition of Randy Orton could change things), adding more muscle to the comedic chemistry of Jeri-KO would seem the perfect complement. Its something for WWE to consider at the very least, as this version of Jericho could prove to be the perfect villainous leader in the same manner in which Ric Flair served many years ago with The Four Horsemen. If not Strowman, the duo of Cesaro and Sheamus would also be a smart choice, provided the foursome were given better material and direction to work with than the comparable (and ill-conceived) League of Nations in 2015.Lana did well to put down the Glasgow crowd and dismissed their cheers by saying, Thank you, but I dont need the support of this pathetic village. But she just as quickly took a major misstep by saying here in America moments later without realizing it or correcting herself. This wasnt quite Hulk Hogan making multiple references to the Silverdome at WrestleMania XXX in New Orleans, but it was close. For as ridiculous as The Shining Stars timeshare gimmick has been, WWE has been incredibly consistent in keeping it alive, in ways that The Titus Brand, Make Darren Young Great Again and Nevilles post-NXT career could only dream of.No one does old school heel better than Owens these days, and seeing him rip up a fans sign at ringside during the main event was a welcomed touch and call back to days of old.Move of the nightWith all due respect to Sin Caras incredible senton onto the floor, in which he landed flush on top of Noam Dar during their cruiserweight six-man tag match, there was a main event spot that provided much more of a crash landing. With Braun Strowman laid out on a table outside the ring during a Fatal 5-Way match, Seth Rollins powerbombed Chris Jericho onto Strowman as the table shattered.WHAT AN IMPACT as @WWERollins smashes @IAmJericho through the table...AND @BraunStrowman! #RAW #Fatal5Way pic.twitter.com/MfwkpxjPX3- WWE (@WWE) November 8, 2016Line of the nightListen, ladies and gentleman, Bill Goldberg has been out of the squared circle for 12 years. This was no ordinary manager, however, and on that day - Wednesday, June 2, 2004 - he was about to tell the assembled expectant media as such with a claim which would not only go down in the annals of football history, but could have equally come back to bite him on the behind.Chelsea had been in the Premier League shadows of London rivals Arsenal, who in 2003/4 had just delivered an incredible unbeaten season and a third Premier League title under Arsene Wenger with their Invincibles side. Neutrals may have pointed to that theme continuing, but furnished with the riches of owner Roman Abramovich, the newly-appointed Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho knew different. Please dont call me arrogant, but Im European champion and I think Im a special one. Jose Mourinho Please dont call me arrogant, but Im European champion and I think Im a special one, said Mourinho, before adding: We have top players and, sorry if Im arrogant, we have a top manager. Mourinho took over from Claudio Ranieri, who had been at Stamford Bridge for four years. At the time, the well-liked Italian professed that his replacement would struggle to make the transition from the Portuguese League to the Premier League. Mourinhos reply was typical of the man.I heard that and I suggest if one of you is Mr Ranieris friend or has his number, you should call him and explain to him that for a team to win the European Cup, it has to beat many teams from many countries. I did not win the cup playing against 20 Portuguese teams. Heres a look at some of Mourinhos funniest moments in the Premier League I played and beat a team from his own country, Italy, from your country and the one he was working in, England. And to win the UEFA Cup, that was the same kind of thing. It was all breathtaking stuff, pure box office, and would continue to be so for both his spells in charge at Stamford Bridge - from 2004 to 2007, and from 2013 to 2015. Mourinho went on to back up his claims by guiding Chelsea to three Premier League titles, the FA Cup in the 2006/07 season and three League Cup wins.Humility is perhaps something one doesnt often attribute to Mourinho, but when asked about his initial Premier League ambitions 12 years ago as he began his career at Chelsea, he replied: The biggest ambition I have is to win the first Premiership match on August 14. When pushed to expand on that theme, he added: The second ambition is to win the second Premiership match on August 21 and we will keep going like this. With earlier Champions League successes at Porto and then later at Inter, it was that prospect of winning pedigree in the hotseat which saw Manchester United decide to ditch Louis van Gaal two years into his three-year contract. Mourinho has replaced Louis van Gaal in the Manchester United dugout Despite seeing their side see off Crystal Palace to win the FA Cup, United vice-chairman Ed Woodward and the Red Devils fans were in the main forced to witness dire football under Van Gaal. All parties at United are now eager to see the Special One bring his special charms to Old Trafford.Combining his two spells in England, Mourinho has won 140 of 212 Premier League games, a win percentage of 66%, the highest in Premier League history and a stat which United hope will continue.Loved and loathed in equal measure, his record of a total of 22 trophies shows Mourinho is nevertheless a serial winner. Heres a look at what Mourinho has had to say about Manchester United in the past So the sacking by Chelsea last December was a particularly bitter pill for Mourinho to have swallowed.dddddddddddd When Mourinho was sacked last December, he left Chelsea just one point above the relegation zone, having lost nine of their first 16 Premier League games.Despite all the silverware, Jamie Carragher would reason on Sky Sports following the Blues 2015 Champions League last-16 exit to Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge that Mourinhos teams will be respected for the titles they win, but theyll never be loved.Following Chelseas 2-1 Premier League loss at Leicester last December, Mourinho was clearly not happy, as Eden Hazard indicated his hip injury would not allow him to continue. The former Chelsea player of the season, Hazard was a shadow of himself in his second season under Mourinho, and only rediscovered his form once the latter had departed. Mourinho on the touchline at Leicesters King Power Stadium in the final game of his second spell in charge of Chelsea in December 2015 Results improved markedly under caretaker coach Guus Hiddink as Chelsea steered well clear of the drop zone, using the same players as under Mourinho, thus pointing to a loss of team spirit.Speaking on June 2, 2004, Mourinho stressed the importance of spirit, which was evident when Chelsea were lifting silverware, but noticeably absent in his final days as Chelsea manager.Im a great defender of team spirit and team work and the first thing I have to promise to my new players is that I will look at them all with the same eyes, he said.I dont want special relations with one of them. I hate to speak about individuals. Players dont win you trophies - teams win trophies, squads win trophies.I cannot say I love this player, but generally I love the players who love to win. Not only the ones that love to win in 90 minutes but love to win every day, in every training session and in all of their lives. Former Chelsea and Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon believes Mourinho is the perfect replacement for Louis van Gaal The United players will be aware that Mourinho has shown he only selects players who demonstrate a continuous work ethic, both with and without the ball. His willingness to castigate and then discard Joe Cole for a perceived unwillingness to track back and defend was echoed when Mourinho sold Blues favourite Juan Mata for £37.1m to United. The two are therefore likely to have only a brief working relationship when Mourinho and Mata are reunited at Old Trafford. It may have previously been unthinkable to even imagine Mourinho at United, but following Fergusons retirement in 2013 and the short but unpopular 10-month stint of David Moyes in 2013/14, followed by the dull, dour Van Gaal style, Mourinho will be perceived as a breath of fresh air, and that is what United are desperate for. There will be no Champions League football for Mourinho, not next season anyway, but he will be given a massive war chest to get new players. Heavily linked in the British press with a move for Chelseas Willian and reportedly desperate to finally land Evertons John Stones, they may be the first of many new arrivals at Old Trafford. Mourinho is reportedly keen on bringing Chelsea forward Willian with him to Old Trafford However, a reluctance to blood youngsters has dogged Mourinho, and at Chelsea, only 20-year-old Ruben Loftus-Cheek emerged from the Blues academy - and even he was only used sparingly.Despite his perceived failings at United, Van Gaal gave young players a chance and we witnessed the explosive start of 18-year-old Marcus Rashford, with 19-year-old Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, 18-year-old Tomothy Fosu-Mensah, 21-year-old Patrick McNair and 23-year-old Jesse Lingard forming a very able supporting cast. United fans will want to see their careers continue to develop at Old Trafford, and for them not to be loaned out elsewhere. The United job is one that Mourinho has long coveted, and the 20-times English champions were keen to get their main. The Special One will now look to prove that 12 years on from his dramatic Premier League arrival, and six months after his sacking by Chelsea, he has lost none of his winning allure.
