LINCOLN, Neb. -- The last seven times Mark Banker faced Oregon, all losses, his Oregon State defenses gave up an average of 578 yards and 45 points a game. Theres no shame in that. Oregon has piled up yards and points against lots of opponents over the years.Mike Riley last year brought Banker with him to continue as his defensive coordinator at Nebraska (2-0), a program that has more resources than Oregon State and presumably more talent. So does Bankers familiarity with No. 22 Oregon (2-0) give him an edge in Saturday nights game in Lincoln?Theres been a lot of cases where Ive known the offenses very well, he said, but I cant do a damn thing about it because Im not playing, and knowing is one thing, and reacting to what you see is another thing.OK. Then does he have better players than he had at Oregon State? He deferred on that, too. He pointed out that his 2008 defense had seven players who became NFL draft picks, and that unit gave up 10 yards a play and lost 65-38 to the Ducks in a defeat that denied the Beavers a trip to the Rose Bowl.We feel like we can match up, Banker said, but theres no sense in talking about it. We have to go do it.What Banker is sure of is that the Cornhuskers will face an offense that thrives on big plays and moves at a dizzying pace.Oregon already has 15 plays of 20 yards or longer. Last year, the Ducks had 94, fifth-most in the country. As usual, the Ducks have blazing fast receivers (Darren Carrington and Olympic hurdler Devon Allen among them) and a premier running back (Royce Freeman). Tight end Pharaoh Brown has become a major weapon since recovering from a devastating injury. And they have a new quarterback in Dakota Prukop who is as comfortable running the zone read as he is throwing the deep ball, and hes improving by the game.If you dont have someone to distribute the ball, whether its hand it off or throw it, then that offense is just an offense with a bunch of good athletes, Banker said. Theyve always been best when the quarterback has good command and control of the ins and outs of that offense. This young man seems to have that.As big a challenge as stopping Oregons plays is having the ability to regroup between plays. Theres not much time. Prukop has taken snaps with as much as 28 seconds left on the 40-second play clock.Fast, fast, fast, Banker said.He offered examples of what goes through defenders minds when theyre on the field.`Let me rest on this type of play, or `Im so tired I cant focus, he said. You get going, and your heart rate is up. Then if they get a big play -- bang, theyre at the line of scrimmage and coming at you. You have to have poise and keep the big plays to a minimum. You know people are going to get yards. Just get them to a manageable third down, go get it, and then be ready to play fourth down because theyre going to go for it on fourth down as well.Nebraska was sound against overmatched Fresno State and Wyoming. The Huskers rank in the top 25 nationally in scoring defense (13.5 points per game) and against the run (81 yards per game), and they are tied for the national lead with seven interceptions. The Huskers came into the season feeling good about their linebacker depth and concerned about their defensive line and secondary. The linebackers have been as good as expected, the front four have held up, and the Nate Gerry-led secondary, which was vulnerable to the big play last season, has become a strength with the emergence of safety Kieron Williams .Linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey downplays what the defense has done so far. The Ducks are a huge step up in competition, and he said he and his teammates can afford no slips. For some teams, one mistake is 15-20 yards. For them, one mistake is a touchdown, Rose-Ivey said. They want those big plays, and theyve got guys up there (in the press box) who are going to be looking for the weak link on our defense.---Online:AP college football website: http://collegefootball.ap.orgUltra Boost Rea . The giant slalom world champion slipped during her first run in the morning, landing on her back and then twisting forward before getting her leg caught in the protective material on the side of the slope. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- During a season full of disappointment, the Jacksonville Jaguars patchwork offensive line has actually been mostly steady. That unit is about to collide with its biggest challenge of the season when the Denver Broncos come to town.Again relying on a ferocious pass rush to boost one of the leagues top defenses, the Broncos will be looking to keep a frustrating season going for the Jaguars as they try to keep pace in a heated AFC playoff race on Sunday at EverBank Field. They are obviously one of the best, if not the best, and rightfully so, Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles said of Denvers defense. At every position, they are extremely talented and they do a good job.The Super Bowl champion Broncos (7-4) will have to fight to return to the postseason while playing in a resurgent AFC West. Denver is currently two games behind the division-leading Oakland Raiders and a game back of the Kansas City Chiefs with five games to play, and it is dealing with an injury to quarterback Trevor Siemian.Siemian missed another practice Friday because of his left foot injury and was ruled out for Sundays game.First-round rookie quarterback Paxton Lynch will start after Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak made the switch official following Fridays practice.Lynch gets his second start of the season in place of Siemian, who sustained the foot injury in the first possession of overtime in last Sunday nights 30-27 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The 24-year-old Siemian finished the game but experienced pain in his foot the next morning. He was placed in a walking boot Tuesday and did not practice all week. Siemian threw for a career-high 368 yards and three touchdowns against the Chiefs. The Jaguars (2-9), losers of six straight games, have already clinched their ninth consecutive season without a winning record and wont be headed to the playoffs without some sort of miracle.Instead, they will mostly spend the last chunk of the season building for the future. We just want to finish and win games here, defensive end Tyson Alualu said. Youve heard it all year about how we have the talent and the guys to be contenders in this league. For us to have the season that were having, at 2-9, it is frustrating. You have to go out there and continue to do your job the best you know how.Thats the message preached by Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley, particularly to the offensive line this week.Denver is first in the leaguue in pass defense and fourth in total defense, largely because of a pass rush that hounds opposing quarterbacks.ddddddddddddIt starts with outside linebacker Von Miller, who has a league-leading 12.5 sacks, and extends throughout a unit that has gotten to opposing quarterbacks 35 times -- more than any other team this season.Jacksonville has done a solid job protecting Bortles. He has been sacked just 23 times while being among the league leaders in pass attempts despite losing left guard Luke Joeckel for the season in October and having to shuffle players at several spots along the offensive line at different points. But they havent faced a group as talented as that of the Broncos, who boast Miller and linebackers DeMarcus Ware and Shane Ray as part of a fearsome unit.Hes special, Kubiak said of Miller. Hes obviously a great player, and hes become a leader on the football team. Von has played very consistent level for us this year, playing at a Pro-Bowl level.Miller said, We are just sitting here trying to get wins. Whatever it takes to get those, we are going to do it.While the Broncos are busy planning to get after Bortles, Jaguars defensive coordinator Todd Wash is doing the same to harass the inexperienced Lynch. For the Jaguars, that starts with rookie defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, who leads the team with six sacks, and former Broncos standout Malik Jackson, who has 4.5.The Jaguars are also dealing with several injuries, notably running back Chris Ivory, who was ruled out against Denver after leaving during the first quarter of a loss to the Buffalo Bills last week with a hamstring injury.Jacksonville wide receiver Allen Hurns (hamstring), wide receiver/punt returner Rashad Greene (Achilles) and defensive end Jared Odrick (shoulder) have also been ruled out. Tight end Julius Thomas (back) is officially listed as doubtful and will likely miss his second straight game.Meanwhile, the Jaguars will search for any way to limit a talented Broncos pass rush -- and get their first win of the season in Jacksonville. We are excited to get a chance to come back after two away games to come play at home, Bortles said. We feel as though, offensively, there are some good things going on, so we would like to continue that and bring it here and hopefully win at home in front of our crowd. ' ' '
