PHILADELPHIA -- With just one prior shootout attempt on his NHL resume, defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere took his own advice Tuesday night to score the game-winning goal against Tuukka Rask in the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins.I really noticed his hands were low, so I said Im going to go in there and just chip one high, Gostisbehere said after netting the decisive goal in the ninth round of the shootout. Thankfully, it worked out. He got a piece of it, but it had enough to get in there.Steve Mason made 45 saves through overtime, and defenseman Michael Del Zotto and center Claude Giroux scored in regulation for the Flyers, who won their second straight to improve to 11-10-3.Mase was the best player on the ice tonight, Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. He got the two points tonight; it was a heck of a performance from him.David Krejci and Brad Marchand had the goals for the Bruins (12-10-1), who lost for the fourth time in five games. Rask turned aside 19 shots and seven of nine attempts in the tiebreaker. He also denied Jakub Voraceks third-period penalty shot to keep the score tied, but eventually dropped to 12-4-1.We feel like we played all right all three periods, said Bruins forward David Pastrnak, stopped five times by Mason. We had an awesome game. (Almost) 20 shots in the first period and at the end of the game we had 47.Both goalies were outstanding in overtime. Mason snatched a shot by Krejci with about 30 seconds remaining, and Rask slid to his right to stop Girouxs one-timer.After falling behind 2-0 on first-period goals by Del Zotto and Giroux, the Bruins tied it on third-period tallies by Krejci and Marchand just 1:18 apart.Krejci spoiled Masons shutout bid 4:26 into the third when he one-timed a pass from defenseman Torey Krug through Mason for his third goal of the season and first since Nov. 13.With the teams skating 4-on-4, Marchand found space in the crease and jammed Krugs rebound under Mason for his seventh goal of the season, second on the Bruins behind Pastrnaks 13.It shows character that you can come back in the third period being down 2-0, Rask said. We played real good in the third. So that is a positive. A point is a point and we will take it.The Flyers had a chance to regain the lead at the 6:23 mark when Voracek was hooked from behind by Bruins defenseman Joe Morrow and awarded a penalty shot. Rask got his right pad on Voraceks attempt to keep the score 2-all.The Flyers also failed to score on a third-period power play after Marchand was called for roughing Giroux with 6:36 remaining. The Bruins were held silent on their own power play following a tripping penalty to Flyers rookie Travis Konecny.Ranked second in the NHL in goals and shots, the Flyers opened the game with 19 first-period shots on Rask and scored on two of them when Del Zotto and Giroux netted goals 1:32 apart.Del Zottos goal was his second of the season and came on a rising slap shot from the left point that beat Rask over his right shoulder with 6:04 remaining in the period.Bruins forward Austin Czarnik was whistled for slashing just 4 seconds after Del Zottos goal, and Boston defenseman Brandon Carlo made things worse for the Bruins when he broke his stick. The Flyers connected when Giroux snapped a pass from Voracek past Rask for his fifth goal of the season and fourth on the power play.Girouxs goal also snapped a nine-game drought. It was the third time in four games the Bruins, who rank fourth in the NHL in penalty killing, allowed a power-play goal. The Bruins carried a 30-15 shots advantage into the third period.Game notes Bruins D John-Michael Liles sat out with a concussion sustained Sunday when he crashed headfirst into the boards. David Pocock has just come through surgery in a bid to play again before a year-long sabbatical, and he is breathing a further sigh of relief with SANZAAR indicating its hesitance at a potential rule change that would make his key skill irrelevant.Pocock went under the knife to fix a hand injury sustained during the Wallabies 36-20 victory over Argentina, treating his Twitter followers to a rather graphic image in the process, while across the Tasman New Zealands Mitre 10 Cup has been trialling some experimental law variations that have left some fans, players and pundits lamenting the perceived loss of the pilfer art - his greatest asset. The laws, which include a change from the definition of when a ruck is formed -- meaning no hands can be used -- have received a mixed response, and SANZAAR, following a recent meeting with all 18 coaches from Super Rugby, the competition the laws will move to next should they be given the green light, is certainly across the fears mentioned above. The prevailing issue is to what extent is the contest still on the tackle, and if youve watched a bit of [Mitre 10 Cup] you can see how hard it is to get in and actually win the ball, SANZAAR Game Manager Lyndon Bray told an Australian media briefing recently. And we want to protect a little bit of that contest. At the same time the balance is making sure the attack team has got confidence to play.So I really like some of it, and I think our view going through to World Rugby, which will look at all of that in November from a decision-making point of view [is] what might it look like going forward; I think those two things, the tackler and [having] the offside line as early as possible in the breakdown -- and maybe therefore redefine that a ruck starts with one player rather than two -- thats working well, but [also] maintaining the contest.Because I think in the southern hemisphere, one of our strengths, in all our core markets, is our ability to get on the balll -- and that gives us a real point of difference if you look across world rugby.dddddddddddd So I think thats a key factor that we want to maintain. All Blacks great Richie McCaw made his name on an ability to win turnover ball at the breakdown, while the likes of Heinrich Brussow, George Smith and more recently Michael Hooper, Sam Cane and Pocock have all proven superb exponents of the pilfer role. The law variations being used in the Mitre 10 Cup have seen a move away from the compact No. 7 to a bigger, ball-running player - as noted by ESPN columnist Craig Dowd; while the changes have helped to speed up the recycle by forcing the tackler to clear the area, they may have in fact gone too far the other way.I think theres two key things that have come out of Mitre 10 [Cup], as a total package, [were] not sure that the whole experimental law is right, Bray said. But the issue around the tackler and his special rights we have in law, getting rid of that and making him forced to get out of the game and come back round like everyone else and [abide by] offside line at the breakdown, all of that is trying to get the support players of the attack team up off the ground. So in the traditional game weve got very accepting of guys in effect driving on the tackler whos on the ground, and thats what were trying to get out of the game so that you can speed up the flow of the ball, whether thats attacking team or turnover. So we were really clear last week that we want to maintain the man-on-feet defender having a strength of contest, we think thats critical. So theres some really good points to come out of it.World Rugby will review SANZAARs findings before moving on any changes, and the laws have to be introduced to Test level at least two years out from the Rugby World Cup to give both hemispheres adequate time to adjust.
