Pokey Chatman wasnt out of work long; the Indiana Fever are hiring her as their new coach. The 47-year-old Chatman was not retained by the Chicago Sky after she guided the team to an 18-16 record and an appearance in the WNBA semifinals last season. She won 106 games in Chicago and led the team to its first playoff appearance in 2013 and a trip to the WNBA Finals in 2014.I can remember when I first went to Chicago, quite frankly, I was trying to build a team to beat Indiana. What they had built was incredible and to see it from the inside out now is great, Chatman said. They have people who have been here for 14 years in this organization. It speaks volumes to whats going on here. She will take over a team that has a rich history in the WNBA, winning a title in 2012 and reaching the playoffs in each of the past 12 seasons. Indiana was 17-17 last season, losing in the first round of the playoffs. Coach Stephanie White left the Fever after the season to become coach at Vanderbilt. My goal was to identify and hire someone who has extensive head coaching experience in the pro womens game, and we are fortunate to bring Pokey to Indiana, said Kelly Krauskopf, the teams president and general manager. Her years of coaching elite level players, both in the WNBA and in Europe, bring us great experience and leadership. Her up-tempo philosophy on offense combined with her affinity for toughness on the defensive end fits our organization. I have watched her teams and admired how her players continuously improve from year to year. The Fever will have a different look not only on the sideline but also on the court, as longtime star Tamika Catchings retired. Indiana still has a strong nucleus with Briann January, Erlana Larkins, Tiffany Mitchell and Marissa Coleman.I dont have to reinvent the wheel here on either side of the basketball, Chatman said. There are areas we want to enhance, but if it aint broke were not going to try and fix it.Before taking over Chicago in 2011, Chatman spent 16 years at LSU, her alma mater. The Louisiana native was an assistant from 1992 to 2004 before becoming the head coach. She was 106-19 at LSU, including a 15-5 mark in 2004 when she was the interim coach after longtime coach Sue Gunter left the team because of illness.Chatman resigned as LSU coach in 2007 after the university became aware of an alleged sexual relationship between Chatman and a former player on Chatmans team, ESPN reported at the time.Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. In the response filed Wednesday to the complaint by 30-year-old Alexander Bradley, attorneys say the former University of Florida player is invoking his Fifth Amendment right that protects people from incriminating themselves. MADISON, Wis. -- Nigel Hayes was 5 of 5 from the field on Sunday. Notably, none of those shots came from outside.Hayes, who has struggled with his 3-point shot this season, was dominant inside as he scored a season-high 17 points to lead No. 16 Wisconsin to a 95-50 win over Prairie View A&M.Asked about his concentration on working inside, Hayes insisted he just wanted to work on layups.A lot of criticism comes from people who dont know basketball well, he said when asked about his shot selection this season. If you look at my shots, theyre very good shots.Hayes has hit just 29 percent of his 3-point attempts this season, and the Badgers (5-2) havent been much better, knocking down 31 percent of their shots from behind the arc coming into Sunday. But with Prairie View A&M (2-5) starting only one player listed as taller than 6-foot-4, the Badgers didnt need much of an outside game. They outscored the Panthers 42-18 in the paint and outrebounded them 44-26.While Wisconsin couldnt find its shooting touch from outside, it more than made up for that with an efficient offensive performance elsewhere. The Badgers hit 24 of their 32 two-point attempts and were 20 of 27 from the free-throw line.Hayes, who was 7 of 8 from the free-throw line, was one of six Wisconsin players to score in double figures. Ethan Happ had 12 points and 13 rebounds, Bronson Koenig and Zak Showalter each scored 11 points, and DMitrik Trice and Khalil Iverson had 10 apiece. This is an example of how efficient he can be and how efficient we can be when we dont settle for jump shots at times, dont settle for early threes and really attack the paint, Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said of Hayes.Prairie View A&M coach Byron Smith said the Panthers were hampered without starters Shayrone Jett, who he said has an academic issue, and Admassu Willliams, who has a knee injury.dddddddddddd Both are listed at 6-8 and would have given the Panthers more of an inside presence.Zachary Hamilton led Prairie View A&M with 15 points. They were just too good, Smith said of Wisconsins ability to neutralize the Panthers 2/3 zone. You just try to mix it up to do some different things and show them down a little bit.BIG PICTUREPrairie View A&M: The Panthers lost their previous three games against the Badgers by an average of 33 points. Trailing 19-16 after the first 7 minutes, 30 seconds constitutes progress.Wisconsin: No offense, Panthers, but this was just a tuneup for Wisconsin in between the Maui Invitational and No. 18 Syracuse.POLL IMPLICATIONSThis isnt the kind of win that impresses voters. Wisconsin is still looking for a signature win, but the season is young.1,000-POINT CLUBHayes and Koenig, both seniors, were honored before the game for scoring more than 1,000 points in their careers. Koenig crossed that mark with 21 points against Tennessee on Monday. Hayes, who has now scored 1,418 points in his Wisconsin career, is one of only four Badgers to score more than 1,000 points, grab more than 500 rebounds and dish out more than 200 assists. He has 595 rebounds and 237 assists for his career. Wisconsin didnt hand out balls to commemorate scoring accomplishments under former coach Bo Ryan.UP NEXTPrairie View A&M: Sundays game was the first of seven for the Panthers on the road. That swing continues Saturday at Houston.Wisconsin: The Badgers host No. 18 Syracuse on Tuesday, their third game of the season against a ranked opponent.---More AP college basketball: www.collegebasketball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 ' ' '
