TORONTO -- The Toronto Rock fired head coach Troy Cordingley on Friday and named assistant coach John Lovell as his replacement. "Troy was an integral part of the success the Rock achieved over the last four seasons including a championship in 2011," general manager Terry Sanderson said in a release. "I felt the team needed new bench leadership to get the franchise back to another championship." Cordingley spent four years as Rock head coach and guided the team to NLL championship game appearances his first two seasons behind the bench, winning in 2011. The Rock lost in the second round last year and were upset in the first round this year after finishing in top spot in the regular-season standings. Lovell, who has spent 30 years as a lacrosse coach, served as Cordingleys assistant the past four seasons. "John is very familiar with everything about the Rock and where we want to be," Sanderson said. "We feel we have a number of people qualified to be a head coach in our league within our organization and promoting from within the franchise gives us a very qualified head coach." This will be Lovells first NLL head coaching job. "Its an honour and Im humbled to be named the head coach of the Toronto Rock," said Lovell. "Its a difficult time as Troy, Terry and I had developed a strong relationship over four years with some real success. Moving forward its a challenge, people involved want to see some changes." Lovell will name his assistant coaches in the coming weeks. Sanderson, who served as an assistant coach the past four seasons, also announced hell no longer be the teams defensive coach.
